Profit factor:
wins over losses.

What your winners made divided by what your losers lost. Above 1, you made money; below 1, you lost it.

The formula

Profit factor = what your winners made ÷ what your losers lost

Profit factorWhat your winners made divided by what your losers lost. Above 1, you made money.

A profit factor of 2 means your winners made twice what your losers lost. It doesn’t care how many trades won, only how much money each side moved, which makes it a quick health check for a strategy.

Example

Your winners made $6,000 and your losers lost $4,000. The profit factor is $6,000 ÷ $4,000 = 1.5: for every dollar lost, you made a dollar fifty.

Questions

Quick answers.

What is a good profit factor?+
Above 1 makes money. Many traders look for 1.5 or more over a large number of trades, but it depends on the strategy and how many trades are behind it.
What does a profit factor below 1 mean?+
Your losers took more than your winners made: you lost money over those trades.
What if I have no losing trades?+
Then there is nothing to divide by, and the profit factor has no limit. Journalcade shows it as ∞ until your first loss.
Does profit factor include fees?+
In Journalcade, yes: winners and losers are counted after fees.
