Expectancy:
what a trade is worth.

What you make on an average trade, once the wins and losses net out. It’s the one number that says whether your trading pays.

The formula

Per trade = net P&L ÷ trades

ExpectancyWhat you make on an average trade, once the wins and losses net out.
Average win and lossWhat a typical winner makes and a typical loser loses. With your win rate, they decide whether you make money.

Expectancy is your net P&L divided by your trades. Put another way: your win rate times your average win, minus your loss rate times your average loss. Above zero, more trades of the same kind should add up to more money; below zero, they add up to less.

Example

You win 40% of your trades. Winners average $300, losers $150. Each trade is worth 0.4 × $300 − 0.6 × $150 = $30, so 100 trades like these make about $3,000.

Questions

Quick answers.

Is expectancy the same as average P&L per trade?+
Yes. Net P&L divided by trades is the same number as win rate × average win − loss rate × average loss, when every trade is a win or a loss.
Can I have a low win rate and still make money?+
Yes, if your winners are big enough. At a 40% win rate, winners twice the size of your losers already pay.
Should I measure it in dollars or in R?+
Both help. In dollars it is what you take home; in R it compares trades of different sizes, so a bigger position can’t hide a weak edge.
How many trades does it take to trust it?+
More is better: a few dozen trades give a first read, a few hundred a steady one.
